Be better than me. The words haunted Ben the entire night. He twisted and turned and groaned into his pillow, but no matter how much he moved, he couldn’t shake the painful truth of his dad’s words.

His alarm went off at ten in the morning, followed a few minutes later by Thomas ringing him. “We up for another game today? By the way, I tried to get tickets for that festival you were interested in, but you’re out of luck. Sold out.”

And that cinched it. He sucked in a breath as he stood and looked at his face in the mirror.

He waited for the world to hand everything to him on a silver platter. But the truth was silver platters fell and everything on them shattered.

Waking up expecting to land one of the higher-paying jobs he’d applied for… It wasn’t enough. If he really wanted to make Christmas special for Nico, he needed to change a few things.

“So, soccer?” Thomas asked. “What do you say?”

“Nah.” He said the word in one long breath. “I’ve got work to do.”
